Why did you become involved in Feldenkrais?I started attending Feldenkrais classes when I was caring for my late elderly mother whilst also working full time. I spent many hours preparing her fresh meals on less-than-ideal work surfaces. So, I would get back aches and twinges of sciatica from doing this. I also felt very stressed as my mom’s health was frequently up and down. I knew I needed something that worked on many levels alleviating stress, anxiety, aches and tension. Doing regular Feldenkrais classes did all this and more for me. I found it fascinating, intriguing, interesting, engaging and I loved learning more about myself and in particular learning to sense myself and how the various parts of me connect up. I felt all of my tension completely ease. My nerves soothed. I also had fun. The lessons made me feel happy, so much so that I decided to train and become a practitioner myself. They also made me feel better and more able to continue caring for my mom and living as full a life as was possible. Feldenkrais works on many levels for me. I have seen it have an equally impactful effect for others in as little as one lesson. Equally, I have found and seen that the more time you give to Feldenkrais lessons the more you will get back. And the great thing is that it is time not effort – a time of discovery, integrating learning, and seeing the ease and pleasure that arises from this.

Who is Feldenkrais for, is it suitable for my age or ability?"Feldenkrais is for everybody, of any age. Whether you want to experience more ease and comfort as you bend or reach, or when working at your desk, playing with your children or grandchildren, or if you are experiencing stress, anxiety or pain. It can also work for people with neurological, conditions, such as strokes and is equally effective in enhancing performance in sports and the Arts.

How does Feldenkrais workScientists like Norman Doidge, author of the best-selling book, “The Brain’s Way of Healing”, have shown that the brain is able to re – wire itself and constantly keep learning throughout life. It is possible to change how you think, move and feel at any age, when you understand how to ‘re – wire’ your nervous system. The Feldenkrais Method utilises the brain’s ability to constantly evolve through using subtle, gentle movements to make the most effective use of the brain’s connection with the skeleton, muscles and soft tissues. We learn how each part of the body cooperates in every movement. This allows for us to easily find better, more comfortable and efficient ways of moving, providing us the means to experience a richer, fuller life.

What happens in an Awareness Through Movement Lesson?Lessons take place on the floor, lying on a soft mat or sometimes in sitting. They generally last about an hour. In a group ATM class, your teacher talks you through, step-by-step, a sequence of small movements. There are thousands of lessons from quieter lessons to the more challenging with bigger or dynamic movements. What they all have in common is they begin with small movements, gradually building in range. The movements assist the discovery of how each part of ourselves can cooperate in every movement or action. You are guided to slow down and reduce effort making it possible to notice your habits or preferences and to have a range of choices for movement. There are plenty of rest periods. These are as important as the movements themselves. They can facilitate a feeling of deep relaxation whilst also allowing for the learning to be easily integrated, making it more available for use in everyday life. Each class is carefully structured to engage your curiosity and help you to gain greater self-awareness and flexibility in thinking and movement. Lessons can be intriguing, curious, fun and lead to a sense of discovery and fulfilment. Through paying attention to ourselves and doing, slow movements with minimal effort we can also experience kindness, tenderness or compassion for ourselves.

Who will my teacher be?He who learns teaches. Ethiopian proverb A teacher is never a giver of truth; he is a guide, a pointer to the truth that each student must find for himself. I am not teaching you anything. I just help you to explore yourself.” - Bruce Lee "I am going to be your last teacher. Not because I'll be the greatest teacher you may ever encounter, but because from me you will learn how to learn. When you learn how to learn, you will realize that there are no teachers, that there are only people learning and people learning how to facilitate learning." – Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais “When you learn, teach, when you get, give.” ― Maya Angelou All of these words resonate with Neruma and Curious Kind Movement. In addition to these potent words, an African proverb which was orally shared with Neruma many years ago. when she first began teaching, is her personal motto. That is, “teach to learn”. So, everyone learns together and her learning expands as a result of teaching. This is something she feels deeply grateful for.

How are your classes different from other movement practicities like Yoga, Pilates or Tai Chi?"The Feldenkrais Method® has similarities with all these practices in that they are all movement based and work with the whole self. The difference is that rather than learning to perfect specific positions, static poses or set movements, the Feldenkrais Method® focuses on the ability of the individual to do directed movements in a manner best suited to themselves. It is done in a non-judgmental way. Lessons are is about process and are not goal orientated. Flexibility and strength are achieved through optimising physical and mental organisation in a way that is different to conventional stretching and muscle building.
-
I'm not very fit, i'm in pain, or I'm elderly, will I be able to do a ATM Session?"Yes. The movements are very gentle. The work is process orientated and non-judgmental so you are encouraged to work within your own comfort range or limitations. Every instruction can be modified to suit your own pace of learning. Visualisation can be used for people who have restricted movement. Research has shown that visualisation of movement can stimulate the same responses in the brain as physical movement.
